10 Low Budget Horror Movies With The Best Jump Scares

While the majority of Netflix horror is...questionable, to say the least, sometimes there's a gem that slips under the radar and becomes a sleeper hit on the streaming service. Hush is one of those films.

Directed by the creator of The Haunting Of Hill House, Mike Flanagan, Hush focuses on a deaf author called Maddie who finds herself being terrorised by a masked assailant. What makes this film stand out in terms of jump scares is the sound design.

With Maddie being deaf, the majority of the film reflects that by having very little in terms of dialogue and sound. Only the subtle sound of a tablet, the sound of birds or the eerie score can be heard. One of the best jump scares comes when Maddie comes face to face with the villain. Before he reveals himself, he jumps in front of the window startling the audience.

The slow build-up to this scene is perfect. Flanagan uses interior, steady cam shots to show the figure pacing around the house, eventually building to the jump scare. Pairing this with the lack of sound puts us into the headspace of Maddie and essentially adds another layer to the movie.
