The found footage genre owes its success to two very different franchises. The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. While The Blair Witch Project focused on the terror of being lost in the wild, Paranormal Activity invited the terror into your home and preyed on some of our deepest fears.

The film focuses on a suburban family who are being plagued by a demonic entity in their home. Director Oren Peli uses the found footage genre to create a huge amount of tension and suspense throughout the film, particularly when the flick heads into the night-time sequences.

A single camera shot in the bedroom brings about some of the jumpiest scenes in the movie. From doors slamming shut to Micah being thrown against the camera, Paranormal Activity uses sound design and steady cam to deliver a jumpy, haunted house tour de force.
