10 Low Budget Horror Movies With The Best Jump Scares

4. Lights Out

Insidious Red Demon 2010 Patrick Wilson
Warner Bros.

Director David F. Sandberg blew up the horror genre with his brilliant short Lights Out. Following the success of the low budget short film, Sandberg made his feature debut by directing a full adaptation of his popular short film.

The story focuses on Rebecca. A young woman who must confront a supernatural entity that is tormenting her. The brilliance of Lights Out comes in the concept and execution. The demon lives in darkness and only appears when the lights are switched off. This makes for some impeccable jump scares that coincide with the timing of a light swtich.

Editors Kirk Morri and Michael Aller must be given some credit here. The editing of Lights Out is crisp and seamless which makes the jump scares even more impactful. The opening scene is the most crucial. It demonstrates the ability of the entity while also using unique camera shots and lighting to create genuine frights. The way the creature moves in particular is haunting.

With a sequel in development, we may well see more from the Lights Out universe in the near future...and that's definitely not a bad thing!
