10 Low Budget Horror Movies With The Best Jump Scares
2. Don't Breathe
Don't Breathe has a terrific array of jump scares lining its 90-minute run time. The story follows a group of thieves who break into a house in order to steal some money. The twist? The homeowner is a blind psychopath who has tuned all of his senses specifically around that house.
Fede Álvarez directs the film and he uses the senses to the best of his abilities. The gunshots are deafening, darkness lines every corner of the frame and the scares are perfectly timed. Some of the best jump scares come in moments of silence and that makes them even more effective, specifically when The Blind Man lunges through a door at our protagonists in the second act.
Made with a budget of $9.9 million, this isn't a lot for a home invasion movie. Álvarez doesn't use the budget on high level effects or CGI. Instead, the effects are all practical which makes the experience feel incredibly real.
Don't Breathe has spawned a sequel that was released in 2021, so maybe there's more on the way. Whether or not Don't Breathe becomes a fully-fledged franchise, the original will remain an all-time great.
