10 Major Challenges Terminator Genisys Faces

3. ...Whilst Still Honouring The Past

Of course, Terminator: Genisys can't just ignore that complicated timeline and 23-year-old continuity it has going. That would just be disingenuous, and have fans feeling cheated. Doing the Days Of Future Past-style reboot is a smart idea from a business sense, but narratively, actually dealing that tangled mess of a back story would be excellent. Especially since Terminator Salvation went a little too far in the other direction from Rise Of The Machines, abandoning the established structure and instead making a dull-as-dishwater action film set entirely in the post-apocalyptic future. It was an admirable attempt to break out of the previous sequel and do something new but, well, it didn't really work. Its references to the older films were token at the best, and just downright terrible at the worst (like the aforementioned youthful Arnie faces which are still haunting the nightmares of audiences around the world). Genisys has got to strike some balance between the two, displaying enough connective tissue to please the fans whilst also not squandering any interesting ideas in favour of sticking to the norm. McG not being involved will probably help.
