10 Major Concerns About Upcoming Movies

7. It Could Be A Soft Reboot - The Matrix 4

Of all the blockbusters due for release in 2021, none is shrouded in more secrecy than The Matrix 4, because despite principal photography wrapping back in November of last year, we still know virtually nothing concrete about the plot.

But given the mediocre reception to the last film, The Matrix Revolutions, and how almost two decades (!) have passed since its release, it's easy to expect that the fourth movie, tentatively titled "Matrix," will be the latest in a long line of soft reboots - or "reboot-quels."

That is, a film that exists as a sequel within the series' chronology, though is for all intents and purposes a rehash of the first movie - because originality is hard, right?

It's probably reasonable to expect a follow-up similar to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss pass the baton to a new generation of heroes in a plot that mirrors the original film, while entering supporting roles for future movies (assuming they survive this one).

Though one hopes a belated follow-up to one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time offers up something more imaginative and less cynical than this, it's a formula that clearly works.
