Not long after the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher, it was revealed that while she had completed her filming for Episode VIII, she was setup to be a big part of IX as well. Lucasfilm, however, issued a denial of rumours at the time that they'd utilise CGI to bring her back (after a CG Leia appeared in Rogue One).

Then just last week Fisher's brother, Todd, revealed that Leia would indeed be in Episode IX, with existing footage being repurposed.

At Celebration, however, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy countered those claims, telling USA Today that while Carrie Fisher has a big and beautiful part in The Last Jedi, she will not be in Episode IX:

Quite what that means for the character is unclear. Provided her role in The Last Jedi remains unchanged, and that she was initially supposed to be in IX as well, then it'd probably mean an off-screen death for the character. This could then be worked into IX in some way, either with a funeral sequence or using part of the opening crawl to detail what happened.

Rian Johnson also spoke about his relationship with her during The Last Jedi panel, saying they connected as writers, and used to spend hours going over the script and ad-libbing scenes. Fisher is of course a huge miss on-and-off screen, and hopefully The Last Jedi, however it goes down, will serve as a fitting tribute to her talent and legacy.
