10 Major Reveals From The Star Wars: The Force Awakens Novelisation
7. General Leia's Dislike Of The New Republic
The relationship between the New Republic and Resistance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens has confused many fans, though another tie-in novel has revealed that the Princess set up this group of fighters after the politicians mocked her paranoia about the power that The First Order were gaining in the Outer Rim. Hinting that there was originally much more to the New Republic's role in the movie, we learn in this novelisation that when the Hosnian system was destroyed, Leia lost a close ally on the form of her Resistance-Senate envoy, Korr Sella (who was supposed to be played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers). This is used to explain that Leia chose not to go there herself because neither party is a big fan of the other. While the New Republic secretly support the Resistance, their decision to publicly denounce the General's organisation is not something Leia can abide. In fact, she even believes they're out to get her! "I would have a terrible accident, or become the victim of some deranged radical," she says of what would happen if she attended the New Republic instead of her envoy. "Or I would eat something that didnt agree with me. Or encounter someone who didnt agree with me." While it's probably not a bad thing that Star Wars: The Force Awakens kept the spotlight off the Senate meetings that plagued the prequels, it still appears as if the movie lost a fairly major subplot along the way.
