4. Kylo Ren's Guilt
If you didn't leave Star Wars: The Force Awakens hating Kylo Ren as much as Darth Vader after watching A New Hope, then there might just be something wrong with you! Of course, the character is a very complex one, and the fact that he's so clearly torn when making the decision to murder his father and embrace the Dark Side is what makes the former Ben Solo such a fascinating antagonist. The novelisation goes into even greater depth about the relationship between Han and Ben though, revealing that the youngster despised his father because the smuggler he was at heart simply couldn't live up to the expectations he had in his mind after hearing about his father's legendary adventures as part of the Rebellion. It's also revealed that Han has never actually seen his son as an adult, making the moment Kylo removes his mask all the more significant. However, while J.J. Abrams has made it clear that murdering Han is the moment when Kylo extinguishes whatever light may be left with him, the novelisation continues to play on the apparent regret and guilt he feels about committing such a heinous act by stating that, "Following through on the act ought to have made him stronger, a part of him believed. Instead, he found himself weakened." Could this apparent flicker of remorse lead to some sort of moment of redemption down the line? It seems unlikely...
