Both Thor movies have been successful, but the sequel didn't receive anywhere near the same kind of response (either critically or commercially) as Phase 2 releases like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 3. The franchise is in desperate need of a shake up, and with rumours that Thor: Ragnarok will take the God of Thunder out of play until the second Avengers: Infinity War movie, the door is wide open for Marvel to make a bold move. That would be to follow the comics by making Thor a woman. However, this isn't simply a female version of Thor. It's an entirely new character (Jane Foster was recently revealed to be the one beneath the mask), and that means Chris Hemsworth could sshow up in a supporting role. That could be a lot of fun to see, especially if he's wielding a giant axe! Kevin Feige has said he doesn't want to reboot their properties, but if Ragnarok wipes out the current version of Asgard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's nothing to say that their Thor couldn't return as a woman, ditching the Jane Foster side of the recently introduced character. With Natalie Portman reportedly not too keen on reprising the role, that might be a necessity for the studio anyway, unless they decide to recast the role that is.
