Now we're getting weird. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Peggy Carter embarked on a romantic relationship with Steve Rogers, but she clearly already had a friendly dynamic with Howard Stark. They would continue working together after World War II, and were shown to still be close friends in a 1970s set flashback in Ant-Man.

We know that Howard eventually married Maria, and Avengers: Endgame proved that they were very happy together. Before that movie was released, though, many fans were convinced that we would one day learn that Peggy was actually Tony's real mother.

This likely ties into the fact recent comic books have revealed Tony was adopted, and one suggestion even made the whole thing less seedy by suggesting that Peggy was trusted by Howard and Maria to act as a surrogate for them because Maria couldn't conceive.

Honestly, this might work in a soap opera, but it probably wasn't entirely necessary for the MCU.

Still, it's undeniably interesting to think about what might have been, and following Endgame, some of these same fans are now convinced that Steve Rogers is Tony's dad...
