10 Marvel Comics You Must Read Before Phase 3

1. Civil War

Phase 3 Infinity
Marvel Comics

Film: Captain America: Civil War (May 6, 2016)

Not much of a surprise here. Much has been made about this film, and the inspiration for Avengers 2.5 is suitably epic. Unlike most suggestions on this list, we know beyond the shadow of a doubt that this comic will have a definite influence on the film.

In the event, from Mark Millar (of Kick-Ass fame) and Steve McNiven, the actions of a group of irresponsible heroes leads to entire neighbourhood to be blown up by a supervillain. The government, supported by Iron Man, imposes sanctions on heroes, with which Cap disagrees. Heroes take sides and become so busy with fighting each other they lose sight of their real goals, until Cap sees reason and surrenders.

Marvel has stated that since secret identities aren’t much of a factor in the MCU the conflict will be related to government oversight and accountability for superheroes. It’s also a safe bet that the actions of The Winter Soldier are going to be a sticking point between the two.

So long as the argument is presented as two-sided (the comics blatantly paint Iron Man as the antagonist) and the heroes actions maintain believable, the result could be an action epic mixed in with a serious philosophical debate.

Agree? Disagree? What comics do you recommend reading before the movies come out? Let us know in the comments.
