It’s easy to write off the conversation between Nick Fury and Captain America as merely an easy way to show the superhero’s moral issues with S.H.I.E.L.D – after all, this is the most important thing to take away from their interaction.

That said, there are other important things this scene tells us – namely, that it’s probably the one film scene that tells us most about Fury. Although his monologue is somewhat threatening – he is essentially saying ‘I’m willing to do anything for the greater good’ – his monologue lays down the theme of people being products of the environments they exist in, which paves the way for Bucky’s reveal beautifully.

The scene also sets up the concept that everyone’s perception of what makes a ‘good guy’ is different, which is a huge part of later films like Civil War.
