2. NOT Having Adonis Retire For His Family - Creed II

Creed 2 Michael B Jordan
Warner Bros.

What Should've Happened

The focal theme of Creed II is - surprise, surprise - family, and much of the film in particular involves Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) coming to terms with the fact that his fiancée and daughter are more important to him than fighting.

The final fight sees the underdog Adonis defending his title against Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) in a rematch.

Though Adonis is decidedly more prepared this time, it felt dramatically right for Adonis to prove himself and take one hell of a beating, but ultimately submit for the sake of his life - and most importantly, his family.

Given the unexpectedly sympathetic depiction of Viktor throughout the movie, him triumphing over Adonis wouldn't have felt like a disservice to either character in the slightest.

In the very least, we should've seen Adonis win the match and retire from boxing afterwards, allowing him to get right what Rocky didn't, and enjoy what matters most.

What Actually Happened

Instead, Adonis actually fights back and wins the final match against Viktor, and despite all of the hand-wringing over Adonis' recklessness, there's no implication at the end of the film that he'll be hanging up the boxing gloves anytime soon.

Granted, seeing Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) throw in the towel and protect his son in a way that Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) wouldn't for Apollo (Carl Weathers) all those years ago is undeniably affecting, but Creed II really felt like it should've been the closing chapter on all the Balboa, Drago and Creed legacies.

But much like Halloween, it's all about box office, and given the popularity of the franchise, we're sure to get at least one more Creed movie before the series takes another, uh, sabbatical.

And if you're among the few who still haven't seen Avengers: Endgame yet, beware that MAJOR SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW in our final entry...
