10 Massively Underrated Horror Movies
4. The Funhouse
The Funhouse was the first major studio effort from Texas Chainsaw mastermind Tobe Hooper, a slasher movie with enough suspense, jump-scares and chills to rival anything the Friday the 13th series has ever produced.
Unlike Jason Voorhees and his mother, Funhouse failed to spawn a mega franchise, but that's no indication of its quality. This was a victim of the genre's over-saturation during the early 1980s, and being unfairly pegged as a 'video nasty' in the UK didn't much to help its cause.
Hooper's take on teenage slaughter was every inch a vintage slasher, but it was a cut above most of its genre counterparts thanks to its creative practical effects from Craig Reardon - the man behind Sloth from The Goonies - and its commentary on societal outcasts.
Don't let the fact it wasn't followed by the obligatory seven sequels fool you, Funhouse is a hack and slashathon that shouldn't be overlooked.
