4. Hela

Thor fans naturally rejoiced when it was announced that Cate Blanchett had been cast in Thor: Ragnarok to play Hela, the goddess of death and Thor's regular foe from the comics.

Blanchett clearly had a ton of hammy fun in the role even if Hela never quite seemed to hit her full stride, so it was disappointing to see the character killed during the climactic obliteration of Asgard.

Despite rumours that Hela was going to return for Avengers: Infinity War as Thanos' (Josh Brolin) love interest Death, it appears that Thor and Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) sister is indeed dead meat for good.

It's a shame as a character this neat-looking and entertainingly acted clearly had a ton of mileage left in her.

Though Blanchett has declared her enthusiasm to return, one suspects the notoriously stingy Marvel Studios won't want to stump up for a returning A-lister payday.
