2. Evil Hulk

What Happened

In the now infamously odd post-credits stinger for The Incredible Hulk, Tony Stark turns up to find Thunderbolt Ross drowning his sorrows in a bar, and the pair discuss his "unusual problem."

In other words, the newly formed Avengers Initiative (which so far has nobody else really involved) know about the Hulk.

What it Teased

It wasn't just that they knew about Banner, Stark's heavy implication was that the Avengers could be used to deal with him if something like the Harlem Incident was to happen again. In other words, we were being primed for precisely that, with Hulk set up for the villain role in The Avengers.

On top of that, Stark had provided Ross with the weapons he was using to try and take down the Hulk, suggesting that they'd have some friction when they came together.

But Then...

Those best-laid plans never materialised and Joss Whedon went with Loki as the villain for The Avengers, with Bruce Banner and Tony Stark becoming immediate best buddies and no real friction.
