10 MCU Storylines We’ll Never Get Closure On

8. What Did The Soul Stone Actually Do?

As the MCU began introducing the Infinity Stones, we developed some basic understanding as to what each Stone was for, and what it could do in the right hands.

All of the Stones were vastly powerful energy sources, deadly to the touch - the Power Stone most of all, representing destruction and the manipulation of cosmic energies. The Space Stone controlled the fabric of physical space, creating wormholes and affecting the structure of matter itself.

The Time Stone allowed for clairvoyance into the past or to scry future possibilities, the creation of chronal loops and limited time travel, as well as the manipulation of aging and entropy. The Mind Stone allowed for complete control of another’s mentality, provided sentience to both Ultron and the Vision and mutated the Maximoff twins to give them extraordinary powers. The Reality Stone had the of transformation and change, converting matter to dark matter as the Aether and potentially allowing the wielder to manipulate reality itself.

The Soul Stone? Nobody really knows. It seemed to be intelligent in a way the others weren’t; it seemed to have trapped the Red Skull on Vormir and cursed him to dwell on there as a spectral guardian; it seemed to demand sacrifices and possibly contain some form of pocket dimension, although it’s unclear whether that was ever real.

But the key word there is ‘seemed’: we never truly found out what the Soul Stone could do, or what it was for. And now that it’s been destroyed, we never will.
