Young Adult Fiction really had a moment a few years back, and at the top of the pile of teen drama and the chosen ones lay The Maze Runner. A mystery that explored a group of young men and one woman that were forced to survive in the middle of a labyrinth, the film unfolded to reveal that they were the last left alive after a world-ending event, experimented on to create a cure by monitoring their brain activity. They'd been left in the maze, discovering all the scientists conducting their experiment were now dead, rescued after escaping by a group of soldiers.

As they fly away in a helicopter from the ruined landscape that used to be a city, the scientists that held them captive turn out to be remarkably Not Dead. Watching the teens leave, a comment is made, revealing that their destination has nothing to do with hard-earned freedom:

"They seem to have taken the bait. It's too soon to say... but they could be the key to everything. So let's move forward. It's time now to begin Phase Two."

And with that, instead of the basic principle of breaking free of the trap - it turns out everything they've done has been part of it all along. Ooooo.
