10 Memorable Films That Utterly Defined 2012

1. The Master

The Master Philip Seymour Hoffman The most enigmatic film of the year by far. I have no doubt that Paul Thomas Anderson will be considered one of the greatest directors of all time in the years to come and that he already has films that will be forever be remembered. The Master deserves a place on that list as well. The movie was the best film of 2012 and was perfectly able to capture the tone of change and un-certainty that was prevalent throughout the year. This is especially noticeable in the U.S. with 2012 being an election year but The Master explores more universal themes that transcend countries and cultures. The story of Freddie Quell just trying to fit in is something that seems so simple yet Anderson fills his movie with the senses of ambiguity and loneliness that help it connect with anyone watching it. The Master leaves you with so much to think about and it only improves upon further viewing as the story seems to reveal more and more about itself no matter how many times you see it. Should any other 2012 films have made the cut? Share your thoughts below.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
