Ang Lee has already proven to be one of the best directors in the world, but with Life of Pi he completely topped himself. Everything about the movie proves it should be a representation of 2012. The use of 3D is one such example. Since Hugo proved that 3D could be a major part of the story telling process and more than a gimmick audiences have been flooded with poorly done effects that are just there to make money. Life of Pi forgoes that completely and uses the medium to enhance the spiritual nature of the story's themes which is nothing short of revolutionary for film. The way that Ang Lee is able to mix the special effects heavy story with real, honest and heartfelt emotions is something that needs to be preserved for years to come as an example of how to be a filmmaker in 2012. The story was said to be un-filmable but just as Kubrick said, "If it can be written, it can be filmed".
