7. You Might Be The Killer

The Final Girls
Screen Media Films

You Might Be the Killer opens with camp counsellor Sam running away from a maniac. Desperate for help, Sam rings his friend, Chuck, who's a film fanatic. Because the killer is following the blueprint of a slasher, Chuck warns Sam of genre tropes, hoping her knowledge will keep him alive. When Sam tells her he's suffering blackouts, Chuck can't help mentioning the classic twist that he could be the murderer without realising it.

Based on the title alone, horror fans know You Might Be the Killer is going to be clichés from beginning to end. Sure enough, it's got skinny-dipping teens, convoluted backstories, and people acting like idiots.

However, these overused ideas don't hinder the story, but compliment it. When Imani realises only one female can be the Final Girl, she tries to killer Jamie, seeing her as competition. By turning archetypes like these on their head, viewers get excited when You Might Be the Killer embraces banality.

Even though the film is a comedy, it's a still a slasher at the end of the day. Due to the genuine scares, gory kills, and awesome special effects, You Might Be the Killer isn't just a solid homage, but a great horror flick in its own right.
