10 Meta Horror Movies That Deserve More Attention
3. Feast
In this Matt Damon/Ben Affleck-produced film (yes, really), bar patrons finds themselves trying to survive the night while their establishment is invaded by ferocious monsters.
The premise is bare-bones, but Feast is far more creative than it has any right to be. Every time a character is introduced, a text pops ups, detailing their name, occupation, job, and their life expectancy. These title-cards mock the genre, reading things like "They wouldn't kill the cripple, would they?" and "Losers and dorks go first, this guy is both."
Although this technique could undermine the scares, it makes the story more engaging. After all, when the bartender's title-card reads, "Horrifying death in 70 minutes," viewers want to see how he meets his maker.
Even though these texts hint at what's to come, Feast is anything but predictable. You think the kid survives? He doesn't have a chance. You thought the hero is going to save the day? He's the first to die. And when the character of Tuffy takes charge, her title-card is rewritten, proving her fate will be decided, not by what some card says, but by herself.
Feast may be short and sweet, but there's plenty here to satiate monster fans and gore-hounds.
