Amat Escalante is one of Mexico's most famous exports in the world of cinema, winning the Best Director prize at the Cannes festival for his thriller Hell, as well helping to produce a whole host of other works that explore the country's brutal and often bloody past.

To hear that he both wrote and directed The Untamed might come as a surprise to a few audiences out there therefore.

Released in 2016 and starring Simone Bucio and Ruth Ramos, the film is centred around a mysterious alien creature that has found an appetite for all things sex and pleasure for humans. It was nominated for the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and the 2016 Fantastic Fest, and currently holds a rating of 72/100 on Metacritic and a 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Much like fellow horror flicks such as It Follows, The Untamed is obviously an exploration into the world of unprotected sex and STDs and, like It Follows, is presented with a masterful direction from behind the camera, but still with an undeniable charm that only comes from independent movies.

In the words of Birth. Movies. Death, The Untamed is: 'A sci-fi sexual drama that will blow your mind'.
