Released as La mansiĆ³n de la locura in Mexico, House of Madness in the UK, and as Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon in the United States, The Mansion of Madness is one of the most infamous horror movies to have emerged from Mexico over the course of the 1970s.

Directed by famous Mexican horror director Juan Lopez Moctezuma in his first full length debut from behind the camera, The Mansion of Madness borrows a lot of its inspiration from the Edgar Allan Poe story 'The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether', and follows the story of Gaston LeBlanc's visit of an insane asylum run by the equally unnerving Dr. Maillard.

The surrealism of the movie is what really sells the impact Mansion of Madness, with the influence of artist Leonora Carrington present in all of the visuals and costumes, and really helping to sell the film's nineteenth century setting.

Despite including an all-Mexican cast and being filmed wholly in Mexico, Mansion of Madness actually filmed in English and had Spanish dubbed over the top prior to its release. Nevertheless, this doesn't subtract away from the jarring visuals and desolate tones the movie manages to strike, and it is sure to leave any audience member with a unnerving sensation even long after the credits have rolled.
