5. Desperate Measures

What is it?: Keaton has a Hannibal Lecter moment in this silly Hollywood potboiler that hit the windscreen before it could take flight. Throughout his career Keaton has demonstrated a volatile streak that lent itself well to various characters. The most extreme example of this was Beetlejuice, but from the mortal plane that honour goes to 1998's Peter McCabe, the incarcerated whackjob at the epicentre of Barbet Schroeder's Desperate Measures. Poor Andy Garcia found himself front and centre in another dud, playing maverick cop Frank Conner. Threatening to topple the movie with a precarious tower of implausible events, Conner had to rely on McCabe to provide a bone marrow sample to aid his sick son. Here again we have a case where Keaton is paired with an interesting and capable actor, and together the pair hold hands as the boat catches fire and sinks, the two stars acting their socks off in the process. Marcia Gay Harden co-starred, and would share screen credit with our subject again in our next selection. It couldn't be more different, yet was equally calamitous...
