8. Perfect Blue (1997)

Okay, yes, this is an anime movie, and for some of you, that might be a turnoff. However, if you give this animated flick a chance, you'll see that Perfect Blue is a pure example of a mind-melding psychological horror. You don't want to miss it just because of its medium.

The movie's plot follows an Idol (Japanese pop singer) named Mima Kirigoe who leaves her group to pursue a career as a serious actor. Unfortunately, Mima's transition into her new job comes with a slew of problems as a stalker obsesses over her, and she loses her grip on reality while haunted by a ghostly relic of her past.

Everything about Perfect Blue is dripping in atmosphere. The animation is mesmerising, the music is tense, the scares are palpable, and the story drags you around like a helpless child.

The narrative takes you in so many directions you'll barely be able to make sense of real life, just like the protagonist herself. Perfect Blue is a paranoid and challenging movie that culminates in a terrifying plot twist that throws everything you've seen into a new perspective.

This isn't your typical "let's fight the bad guys" anime; it's a creepy psychological fearfest.
