10 Mind-Bending Sci-Fi Movies That Will Melt Your Brain
7. Existenz (1999)
David Cronenberg tackles video game culture - it was always going to melt brains.
Existenz is an experience unlike any other. The plot concerns a video game designer who may or may not wind up as a character in a game that she may or may not have created. If that sounds confusing, it totally is: Existenz (and thus Cronenberg) gets a sick kind of pleasure out of toying with what you believe is or isn't happening, and it's an approach that renders the film as an equally frustrating and entertaining ride.
This movie has its fair share of "what the f*ck is that?" moments: there are alien pod things, guns made out of flesh, and countless moments of weirdness that only Cronenberg could have ensured. The point of Existenz is to explore the relationship shared between human beings and video games, of course, and in a lot of ways the movie bears a number of comparisons with Cronenberg's earlier movie, Videodrome.
The ending of Existenz, which pretty much turns everything you've seen on its head, is arguably the film's most mind-bending moment. Seriously: you've got to see it just for that.
