1. The Idea For Death Proof Came From Tarantino Wanting To Buy A Volvo
One of the things that marks a great storyteller is the ability to find inspiration in anything even something as mundane as wanting to buy a vehicle. According to Tarantino, about ten years before directing Death Proof, he was speaking to a friend about buying a car. Specifically Tarantino wanted to buy a Volvo, as they were known for being particularly safe - he explicitly didn't want to die in a car accident like the one in Pulp Fiction. It was the friend he was talking to who provided the inspiration. Taratino's friend responded by saying that a person can buy any car they want and just give it to a stunt team (along with say, ten or fifteen thousand dollars) and they'd be able to death-proof it. The term death proof stuck in Tarantino's mind for a very long time, and it (along with the stunt link) eventually became the basis for the film.
