10 Mind Blowing Facts You Never Knew About The Lord Of The Rings

3. Frodo MURDERED Gollum In Early Drafts

Peter Jackson Lord Of The Rings
New Line Cinema

Throughout the three Lord Of The Rings movies, Frodo is so removed from the action of the rest of the cast, that he pretty much never actually kills anyone throughout the movies. At least no one the films bothered to give a name.

But in early drafts of the movie, that was going to be a VERY different matter indeed.

Most of the scene at Mount Doom goes the way the final film turned out, but with one key difference. When Gollum and Frodo start wrestling over the ring, Frodo ends the conflict by throwing Gollum and the ring both over the side into the depths of Mount Doom. Intentionally killing the insane hobbit by way of volcano.

For a character like Frodo, this feels wrong for him to do. Not that the rest of the cast has any room to judge, but It's definitely good that they changed it in later drafts to Gollum dying because his obsession with the ring had overtaken literally everything else. Frodo killing him knowingly just feels wrong.
