Originally, Peter Jackson wanted Lord Of The Rings to be two films instead of three, the same approach taken with the animated LOTR adaptations from the 70's made by Ralph Bakshi and Rankin Bass. But of course, somewhere along the way, Jackson likely figured out the absolute mess of a movie duology that would come out as, and so decided to make it a trilogy.
