10 Mind-Blowing Film Rumours That Turned Out To Be Fake

5. Cannibal Holocaust Killed People

Another case of an Italian director being hauled up before a court because of crimes against decency, the animal kingdom and humanity itself, the film Cannibal Holocaust stirred up rather a lot of controversy upon its film festival premiere. The movie, which sold itself as a semi-documentary about tribal culture, involved many scenes of violence, including the murder of people and brutal killings of animals (most of which were actually done for real). People were so appalled by Cannibal Holocaust and convinced that what they had seen had truly happened that the filmmaker Ruggero Deodato was placed under arrest just days after the film had been shown to audiences. On trial for obscenity and at one point murder, Deodato had to explain to the court how he achieved many of the film's shots and violent sequences, a task made difficult by his own insistence to Holocaust's actors that they were to stay out of the public eye for the next year. Eventually the cast and crew were brought in to support the director and/or prove that they were still alive, but the animals had still been killed and several members of the outfit were given suspended sentences.
