10 Mind-Blowing Film Rumours That Turned Out To Be Fake
4. Charles Manson Created The Snuff Genre
You've likely heard a lot of insane, terrifying stuff about Charles Manson and his 'family' of devoted followers, and what's scarier is that most of them are probably true. Most. You see, Manson is given by some the dubious honour of having created the snuff genre. The story goes that when the Manson Family would break into people's homes and kidnap them, they would film the real-life scenes of torture on violence that they inflicted upon their victims in order to sell the gruesome home movies for a profit. (How much they thought they'd make, according to those who believe the rumours, is unclear.) The rumour was perpetuated by a 1976 exploitation film called Snuff, which sold itself as including real-life murders but was quickly revealed to be a fake out for attention. While you may well have heard of snuff films, it's almost a guarantee that you've never actually seen one, and nor has anyone else: according to US authorities, there have never been any accurate reports or discoveries of films with true-life killings in them. The Manson Family may have been twisted and evil, but at least we don't have to watch them in action.
