10 Misleading Movie Trailers That Totally Fooled You
5. Birdman - This Is Definitely Not Part Of The MCU
I must admit that this one had me fooled.
Birdman: Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance, is an Academy Award winning and critically adored piece of experimental cinema that explores the duality that actors experience when they are forced to live as a remnant of their past work. It's a thought provoking movie that seemingly follows its characters in a single movie-spanning long shot, that used dark corners and doorways as a way to cut away. The film was ambitious in its ideas, needing extensive rehearsals to carry out the movie successfully, but it follows through expertly.
With that in mind, the trailer criminally undersold the movie to the public. Understandably, trailers have less time to really get across a movie's message, but it's still such a shame to watch the Birdman trailer now and with hindsight.
The Birdman trailer struggled to get across the messages of duality, instead using Michael Keaton's pseudo alter ego: Birdman, and the imaginary superhero movie action, as the main point of interest. After opening on a floating, meditating Keaton in the first few seconds of the sequence, we are then treated to a winged superhero fly-around, explosions blowing up New York and giant robotic bird-like creations.
It definitely piqued the interest of fans of the MCU, and you can see why, as the trailer seemed to present an interesting take on a super-anti-hero story; similar to what Brightburn wishes it was. But alas, cinemagoers looking for mindless action were thoroughly disappointed. The rest of us though? We were pleasantly surprised.
