For most people, the zombie genre had really reached a point of exhaustion in 2017. It had been 13 years since Shaun Of The Dead had reinvigorated the genre. Not to mention, The Walking Dead had come and swept the world by storm and subsequently stayed on the air far too long by that point. Yet, there was still a cult-like group of horror fans that payed good money to see any and every zombie flick that hit the big screen.

And while anyone who payed attention to the It Comes At Night trailer long enough to see that it an A24 movie, knew the film was going to be a lot more complex than just a gross out gore fest; the rest of us were totally fooled by it.

The trailer features black-goo-spewing creatures with blacked out eyes and creepy dark veins all over their bodies, ominous banging is heard all around a locked up house and characters talk in hushed tones about a mysterious virus: all tell-tale signs of a zombie movie.

But while the film does take place in a world ravaged by a killer virus, this is not some clichéd zombie romp. The movie is actually about paranoia and interpersonal relationships. Being an A24 film means that the story is a lot heavier on the psychological horror than on any kind of gore, and any gore you do see in the trailer is actually a result of nightmares. Needless to say, many Z fans were extremely disappointed.
