10 Mistakes Marvel Need To Avoid With Black Widow
3. The Gender Issue
The Mistake: On an episode of Saturday Night Live that Scarlett Johansson, there was a skit that made light of the fact that Marvel might not know how to make a female superhero movie. The joke was that they made their Black Widow film into a typical rom-com you might see Katherine Heigl in.
While it's obviously a comedic take, there's probably some unfortunate truth to it.
Marvel have several female heroes on their roster now and Captain Marvel will mark their long journey to bringing a solo female outing. But they are still guilty of handling their female characters in the same cliched ways most studio action film.
They are love interests/damsels in distress who serve as motivations for the heroes. And while Black Widow is a strong character, Age of Ultron showed us even she isn't immune.
The Solution: Does this film need a female director to work? Or course not. Would a female director help to ensure a the character is handled with respect and not made into a stereotype? Most likely yes.
Find someone who will focus on character while giving us a well-rounded female protagonist. Susanne Bier, coming off the fantastic The Night Manager miniseries, would be a great fit for the material.
