10 Modern Slasher Horror Movie Villains That Went Unnoticed
7. Billy Murphy - The Final Girls
In The Final Girls, Max attends a tribute screening of the cult-classic, Camp Bloodbath, which her deceased mother starred in. During the screening, Max and other attendees find themselves transported into the silver screen, forcing them to team up to defeat the film's villain - a masked psychopath called Billy Murphy.
When Billy was a kid, a group of bullies tried to scare him by setting off a bunch of fireworks. Tragically, one of the firecrackers struck Billy directly, incinerating him. Although he survived, his entire body was covered with third-degree burns. Driven mad from the experience, Billy started killing anyone who had the misfortune of crossing his path.
Because The Final Girls is a satire with its tongue firmly in cheek, it's no surprise to learn it's littered with horror staples. And because Billy Murphy is a blatant homage to Jason Voorhees (right down to his weapon of choice being a machete), it would've been easy for the film to turn him into a one-note stereotype.
But by giving Billy a heartwrenching backstory, he comes across as more sympathetic than the average masked maniac.
