In the build up to Suicide Squad in 2016, the movie's marketing campaign did a fantastic job of making the third instalment in the DCEU look incredible. The trailers painted the picture of a fun, colourful, Guardians of the Galaxy-esque movie, and drew huge numbers to its opening weekend.

One of the most exciting and most anticipated aspects of the movie was Jared Leto's version of the Joker. Following on from Heath Ledger's iteration of the character, albeit eight years later, was always going to be an obstacle for the DCEU version to overcome, but this was something that intrigued comic book fans everywhere.

However, there is no denying that even without comparisons to the character from Christopher Nolan's franchise, Suicide Squad's Joker was poor. Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips have since proved that an excellent post-Dark Knight Joker is possible, but Leto and David Ayer simply couldn't produce it.

The movie tried to offer something different, but the gangster style Joker simply missed the mark on every level. More development and more than the tiny amount of screen time allowed may have helped, but as it was, the inclusion of the Clown Prince of Crime did nothing but take even further away from an already bad comic book movie.
