10 Moments Of Bad Movie Science That Made Us Cringe

4. Bus Jump (Speed)

speed bus In the action blockbuster speed, Keanu Reeves attempts to play a police officer. After a hostage situation in an elevator does not pay off, Dennis Hopper's grizzled ex-cop finds himself remotely hijacking a bus, attaching a bomb to it which will go off if the bus drops below 55 miles per hour. While contrived and unrealistic, this plot device allows for high-speed action through the highway for Keanu and Sandra Bullock to maneuver around. When the unfortunate bus finds itself on a strip of highway under construction, the hostages must prepare to jump the gap of the unbuilt bridge. The moments of bad science in Speed comes when the bus leaps majestically across the bridge. The disconnected portion of road is not set against a ramp of any sort. But despite this, the bus manages to defy gravity as it tilts upwards in a way that results in the passengers safely landing off on all four tires, rather than becoming explosions of blood and bone chunks against unfinished asphalts.
