10 Moments That Literally Stopped Movies

8. Cool Beans - Hot Rod

The Lonely Island's 2007 comedy Hot Rod may not have been a critical or commercial success, but it has endured as a cult classic thanks to its off-the-wall humour and, well, cool beans.

Nobody who's seen the film will ever forget the deeply bizarre scene in which Rod (Andy Samberg) and his pal Kevin (Jorma Taccone) reconcile, each agreeing that the situation is now "cool beans."

But rather than swiftly move things along, the movie literally stops for an entire minute to remix various takes of the pair saying "cool beans" into a bizarre metanarrative rap, complete with an out-of-nowhere drum beat.

It's the equivalent of someone's kid brother using video editing software for the first time, and yet it's also completely hilarious.

Honestly, it's probably one of the most fascinating pieces of absurdism you'll find in any piece of American cinema from the last 20 years.

The scene very nearly didn't make the cut, until Jorma Taccone created the drum backing track to tie it all together. When it was included in the film's final test screening, it was consistently rated as one of the audience's favourite parts.
