10 Monster Movies To Watch In 2017
Is there a third Cloverfield movie due this year?
If animal performers like Rin Tin Tin can receive more fan mail than their human co-stars then we shouldn’t be surprised that a 400 ft tall fire-breathing amphibious tyrannosaurus mutant from the Mesozoic period has his own fan club.
With more than thirty films under his belt as well as appearances in video games, books and documentaries, Godzilla really is King Of The Monsters but he’s only one of several creatures competing for our attention in 2017.
Also around are a handful of intelligent apes, a few sharks, a mummy and some creatures on other worlds. For good measure, J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield monsters are also expected to put in an appearance in some form thanks to the expansion of that particular universe into space.
All told, 2017 will be a good year for lovers of creature features.
And it's needed, given that it’s been a paltry few years, what with I, Frankenstein, Tremors 5 and the like. Hopefully, now the genre is climbing out of the rut and is back with a vengeance.
10. Sharknado 5: Earth 0
Like Nicolas Cage’s inebriated writer in Leaving Las Vegas, the Sharknado franchise hit rock bottom years ago and kept on going so now it’s only a matter of time before the inevitable.
That said, there’s still a surprising amount of dumb fun to be wrung out of this series. Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens was a lot like eating a 134 pound burger with bacon, mayo and extra cheese – great while it lasted, but you felt guilty and nauseous afterwards.
Due this summer, Sharknado 5: Earth 0 looks set to continue the trend of celebrity cameos, movie references and willful absurdity as the sharknado goes global, tearing through locations such as Australia, Bulgaria and the UK. Ian Zierling, Tara Reid and Cassie Scerbo all return to do battle with the digital creatures, but how will director Anthony C Ferrante up the ante this time round? Watch this space.
