4. Ava Was Manipulating Caleb All Along - Ex Machina

Ex Machina
Universal Pictures

In an attempt to test whether or not his artificially intelligent robot Ava possessed true consciousness, Blue Book CEO Nathan Bateman deliberately brought in one of his company's programmers, Caleb, to secretly see if Ava could convince him to fall in love with her and help her escape.

And as 2014's consistently mesmerising Ex Machina reaches its climax, it's revealed that Caleb actually realised Nathan had been studying the two's secret conversations and had still found a way to successfully aid Ava in her attempts to flee Bateman's secluded home.

From here, the highly intelligent android was finally able to get out of her room and ultimately, with a little help from fellow robot Kyoko, kill her creator.

However, just when you thought you had this whole thing worked out, Ava goes and pulls the biggest swerve of all shortly after her great escape.

Ava had actually masterfully manipulated Caleb into falling in love with her, using the lonely soul to help her break out of her prison before not thinking twice about leaving him locked inside of Nathan's home as she embarked on her new life in the real world.

This apparent love between man and machine was nothing more than a lie designed to secure Ava's freedom.
