Throughout Todd Phillip's take on the 'Clown Prince of Crime' known as Joker, a troubled Arthur Fleck is seen bonding and eventually spending a decent amount of time with his neighbour Sophie Dumond.

She comes to see one of his stand-up routines. The two share a steamy kiss. And Sophie even accompanies Arthur during his visits to his mother in hospital.

And right up until the moment Arthur opted to let himself into Sophie's apartment, after learning he was adopted and abused by his mother's boyfriend as a child, viewers still had every reason to believe the pair's relationship was legit.

However, the moments that follow Arthur's unexpected arrival, with Sophie finding him on the couch and asking the person she'd only really met in passing to leave her home, soon reveal that the two's time together had been nothing more than a figment of Fleck's imagination.
