Clearly, Tom Hanks is one of the greatest actors of his generation and is viewed by many as one of the greatest of all time.

While meticulous prep or the occasional dabble in 'method' is one thing, Hanks' dedication to some of his roles has ended up hitting the actor's health hard in later life.

In 2013, the Toy Story favourite revealed that he had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. And playing a part in this, Tom cited the preparation for his role of Chuck Noland in Robert Zemeckis' much-lauded Cast Away.

Ahead of Cast Away, Hanks lost a total of 55 lbs to slim down to the slender figure of the stranded Nolan. While that weight loss clearly worked in terms of how it gave the perfect visual for somebody who ultimately ended up spending four years stuck on an island, no preparation should realistically push an actor to lengths that end up taking a heavy toll on their health in such a serious way.

This wasn't the only time Tom Hanks messed with his body for a role, of course, for he also dropped 26 lbs for Philadelphia - which is another film cited as playing a part in the actor eventually developing diabetes.
