10 More Actors Who Tried Like Hell To Win An Oscar (But Failed)
8. Leonardo DiCaprio - J. Edgar
Proving to be the nearly man of the Academy for a depressingly extended spell of his always intriguing career, it did seem as though Leonardo DiCaprio was destined to act as the perennial Oscar season bridesmaid before he finally picked up that long-awaited gong for his dedicated work on The Revenant in 2016.
Before then, though, Leo had put in a number of notable shifts in an attempt to finally strike Oscar gold, with his gripping depiction of infamous stockbroker Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street and mesmerising transformation into former head of the FBI J. Edgar Hoover both coming up short in the 2010's.
It was that latter failure that likely sat as the more painful of the two, with DiCaprio being buried under, according to THR, "fake teeth, a bald cap, a device to reshape one nostril, latex body pads, colored contacts and layers of silicone," when portraying Hoover from his mid-20s to 70s.
J. Edgar ultimately didn't fly with critics and fans alike, squandering a ton of the good will drummed up by his compelling turns in Christopher Nolan's Inception and Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island just a year earlier.
