Taking on increasingly challenging and unexpected roles seemingly by the year, it feels somewhat unbelievable to discover that the deeply diverse Jake Gyllenhaal has yet to win an Academy Award... and hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since way back in 2006 for his part in Brokeback Mountain.

But it hasn't been through lack of trying.

Embracing just about everything sent his way throughout the 2010's, Gyllenhaal has put himself through tactical training for End of Watch, dropped a ton of weight to play a stringer in Nightcrawler, and got absolutely carved up to depict the life of a boxer in Southpaw. That last project in particular seemed to involve Gyllenhaal putting his heart and soul into the part in an attempt to finally get recognised once more by the Academy, training for five months as an actual boxer would and utterly throwing himself into the research required to play a man who'd lost his wife and had his child taken away from him by child protective services.

Yet, all that still couldn't get Gyllenhaal noticed come Oscar season and Southpaw eventually found itself getting lost in the shuffle before being labelled "an undercard bout" of a movie.
