10 More Actors Who Tried Like Hell To Win An Oscar (But Failed)
3. Will Smith - Concussion
Despite experiencing something of a mixed bag of reviews in recent times when it comes to his part in everything form Suicide Squad to Gemini Man, Will Smith has still been able to offer a few reminders of the powerhouse dramatic chops that still lie beneath his sometimes questionable career choices.
Once again showcasing how sensitive and compelling a dramatic force he can be when given the right material, Smith gave one of the most subtle and convincing performances of his career back in 2015 when tasked with depicting forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu in Concussion.
Yet, his detailed work as the man who fought against the NFL when it came to his research on CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) being suffered by professional players was eventually overlooked when it came time to pass out Oscar nominations, despite being handed a nod at the Golden Globes for his praiseworthy work.
Joining the #OscarsSoWhite movement brought on by a lack of diversity in that year's nominations, Smith would ultimately sit out the ceremony altogether. Smith did see his critically acclaimed turn in King Richard acknowledged coming into this year's event, however, and has been widely tipped to finally lift the gong when all is said and done.
