10 More Amazing Trailers That Tricked You Into Seeing Terrible Horror Movies
8. The Exorcist: Believer
After David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy concluded, he prepared to rejuvenate another iconic haunting franchise from the 1970s, The Exorcist. Though 2018's Halloween was met with praise, the two follow-ups left much to be desired. So, when Exorcist: Believe was green-lit, horror fans were justifiably dubious.
But not only was the trailer suitably unsettling, it successfully scratched that nostalgic itch. Seeing Ellen Burstyn reprising the role of Regan's mother after 50 years was reassuring. Once the Tubular Bells theme kicks in, viewers are sure to get chills.
But apart from the lead actresses' performances, Believer has nothing going for it.
The callbacks to the original are so incessantly forced, it's like the filmmakers are admitting they have no fresh ideas of their own. Burstyn does the best she can with the material she's given, but hasn't enough screen time to salvage this dreck. On top of that, the way she exits the movie is deeply insulting.
This legacy sequel is so bereft of scares and innovation, it'll leave you wondering why David Gordon Green was keen on reviving the property in the first place.
