The Resident Evil games are renowned for focusing on atmosphere and building tension slowly. For this reason, the gaming community was devastated when Paul WS Anderson adapted the zombie property into an action-oriented blockbuster. After seeing how badly the source material was butchered, many gamers gave up on the movie franchise long before it concluded.

However, Resident Evil: Retribution offered a glimmer of hope. The teaser opens like a Sony product placement ad, while Patrick Stewart narrates about the advancements of recent technology.

As Stewart optimistically discusses what the future may bring, it transitions to a post-apocalyptic world infested with zombies.

Despite the clever misdirect, some sceptics were still convinced Retribution was going to be another dumb popcorn flick.

But after seeing Retribution's official trailer, it appeared as if the undead saga was trying something new. In this promotion, the badass heroine, Alice, is inexplicably depicted as a content suburban housewife. Not only that, characters who've died in previous entries have miraculously returned to life.

What does this mean? Is Alice in a simulation? Was it all a dream? Is Retribution a soft reboot?

Even though it's an innovative idea to play with, it's abandoned within the first ten minutes. After that, Retribution goes right back to being an insufferable schlockfest.
