10 More Awful Times Movie Actors Were Combined With CGI
2. The Entire Cast - Cats
The first trailer for director Tom Hooper's adaptation of the famous musical dropped in mid-July, and was swiftly met with a tidal wave of vitriol, mockery, and a general "oh god, my eyes" response. It immediately became the internet's latest punching bag, almost overnight, and it's still a hot topic all these weeks later.
The biggest problem with the CGI is that the human/cat hybrids just look downright creepy. It looks like there's a human face trapped inside a cat's body that's desperately trying to push its way out, and the overall effect is rather unsettling.
This issue could've been rectified had the filmmakers decided to give the characters more cat-like noses and mouths, but instead, they've settled for this awkward middle ground with a human face cut out and pasted on top of a furry body, and the combination does not gel.
If you want to check out some live-action human/cat hybrids done much better than this, look at Doctor Who. Seriously. The 2005 revival featured a race of humanoid felines created entirely with makeup and prosthetics, and the results were incredibly convincing - mainly thanks to the decision to make the faces more cat-like in terms of their noses, mouths, and overall facial structure.
Cats still has several months before release so it's important to give it the benefit of the doubt, but the film makes our list based purely on what we've seen so far.
